The use of a treatment material (tissue conditioner) to re-establish tone and health to irritated oral soft tissue, usually applied to the edentulous alveolar ridge.
Currently, there are 3 main categories of Irrigants:
Lubricants: Lubricants are used to make instrumentation easier. They reduce the friction between the endodontic instrument and the canal wall. If the canal is wet or lubricated, then removing dentin by either hand instrumentation or mechanical instrumentation becomes much easier.
Disinfectants: The disinfectant category of irrigants comprises several products. The most easily available and commonly used irrigant is NaOCl. NaOCl has two good advantages: (A) it dissolves necrotic tissue, (B) it kills bacteria almost completely.
Chelating agents: Chelants are chemicals that form soluble complex molecules with certain metal ions, inactivating the ions so that they cannot react with the other elements or ions to produce precipitates/scale. In dentistry, chelating agents bind with calcium and carry it out of the canal. The chelating agent most used in endodontics is EDTA.
Medicaments are those substances which are mainly used to be pharmacologically active, specially prepared on the prescription, dispensed or administered by authorized personnel to prevent or treat diseases in humans or animals.
